WebbedSpider

WebbedSpider can build up a copy of a web site gathering only the files that are necessary for the web site. The program will follow links in HTML files to produce the site tree, so files such as the following are not collected:

  • temporary files
  • version control configurations
  • old and unused files

WebbedSpider is a non-interactive command-line program, mainly designed for use as a regular timed task (e.g. in a cronjob.) The command-line options specify the web site directory and what page(s) to consider as entry page(s). WebbedSpider builds up the site tree and copies it to the destination.

It has been developed and implemented under the GNU/Linux operating system. It will not run under Windows at this time.

Building

To build WebbedSpider on a Linux system, you will need GCC installed and set up. Then you must run the following commands:

tar -xzvf webbedspider-1.0.tar.gz
cd webbedspider-1.0
make

If the program built with no errors, a binary named webbuild will have been created.

Using WebbedSpider

To run WebbedSpider, execute webbuild as:

webbuild --root /web/site/root --dest /web/site/dest

WebbedSpider will take the web site from /web/site/root and recreate it at /web/site/dest. It will initially look for a index file (index.html, index.htm, default.html or default.htm) and parse it for links.

If the main index page is not named index.html then you can specify the file at the end of the command-line.
